Random is Order

"Creativity is the ability to introduce order into the randomness of nature." ~ Eric Hoffer

Ah, such is the way of the world.

I have two tests today. How did that happen? I’m taking two online classes with widely differing subject matter, and psychotically different schedules, yet they both have tests on the same day.

All of my classes this term are operational. I’m in Hospitality Industry Human Resources and Hospitality Industry Information Systems this term, plus I’m the TA for Hospitality and Event Risk Management. I’ve read more information on the working side of the Hospitality Industry than I’ve ever wanted to know in the last 2 weeks, and I have 4 more to go.

I know I’m whining. It’s just that my two majors have such widely varying subject matter. My Event Management major covers fun things like how to decorate events or plan a menu for a 5 day convention while my Hospitality Management major covers Human Resources and housekeeping management systems.

The first part of Summer term, I had 2 classes that had us doing hotel tours every week, or planning menus while enjoying catered “coffee breaks” so we could learn about the variety of food provided in that setting. Since I’ve been planning events for more than half of my life, menu and event planning is completely fun and exciting. Learning about labor relations is not. Blech! I want my fun classes back!

Random Monday 7/8/13

Random Monday @NotInadequate

Once again, this week’s Random Monday post is coming at you as a link-up to my bloggy friend Deb over at Not Inadequate. Deb is a funny lady. You should check her out sometime!

~ I kind of actually got to do the “Monday is cancelled, go back to sleep thing” today. Not because of anything good, mind you. No, because I woke up with a raging migraine. My only option was to go back to sleep after taking some headache meds. There went all of my plans for the day.

~ I spent hours with my friend this weekend planning out our school schedules for the next several semesters. If your GPA is at a certain level or higher (at least 3.5,) our school gives you the option of registering for three semesters of classes at one time. This means that I was allowed to register for Summer 2013, Fall 2013 and Spring 2014 back in March of this year.

Now, I’m definitely a planner, and regularly schedule out my activities a few months in advance. But even I get the willies planning out what amounts to my life for more than a year. Still, after hours of relentlessly juggling, checking and rechecking, I think I am finally all set with my schedule, and pretty much know what I’ll need to take every semester between now and graduation in December 2014. Yes, it means 4 more semesters of full-time classes (including a full Summer session,) but it will all be worth it once I finally have my degree in my hot, little hands.

I will have to request overrides for both Spring and Summer 2014 so I can take more than the regularly allowed number of credits per semester, but again, as long your GPA is good, they will allow it. I currently have a 3.93 (darn that A- in accounting!) so I’m pretty much a shoe-in for the override. Plus, I’m only requesting to add 1 more unit in the Spring, and 3 more in the Summer. This will put me at 18 units for Spring and 15 units for Summer. Of course, I will still have a part-time job plus part-time internships in addition to being in school full-time right up until I graduate.

~ I’ve officially set up my new domain for my blog at my new web hosting company, and I’m in the process of learning how to design a custom background, header, etc. My initial design is going to be pretty basic as I am planning to pay someone to do something a bit fancier down the line, but I want something more than a free WordPress theme. I do have school, internship and life stuff to deal with along the way, so I’m not entirely sure when I’ll get everything completely shifted, but I’m thinking it might be another couple of weeks. All I can say is that Google has been my friend throughout this whole process because I would have NO IDEA how to go about doing any of this without learning how online.

After polling friends (both blogger and offline,) I did decide to go with a complete name change of my blog, domain, etc., to be more in line with what I talk about here. I’m still trying to figure out how to get all of my followers from here over to the new blog, but will be working that out soon as I want to get moved before any of my existing followers get too attached to my current theme or blog name.

~ I am so impressed with the wear I’ve gotten on my OPI polish job that I did on the 4th of July. It’s been 5 whole days, and I haven’t had a single chip. In fact, I’m JUST starting to show wear along the free edge of my thumb and index finger on my right hand.

This is what my manicure looks like after 5 days.

Look ma! No chips!

Here’s the slight wear along the edges.

See the white edges on the thumb and index finger?

I haven’t been quite as impressed with the Julep Fireworks glitter polish that I have on my accent nail. It’s been slowly wearing a little more each day on the free edge. I can’t figure out if this is because it’s a glitter polish, or if the issue is the Julep formula. I’m planning to re-do my nails tomorrow using only Julep polish so that should give me a better idea. I love this polish job and love that it has lasted so long, but I’m a little over the red, white and blue color scheme on my nails at this point. I’ll be sure to post a wear test on the straight Julep polish mani once I have more data.

~ I should be receiving my July Birchbox and my first ipsy Glam Bag this week, and will be putting up reviews for June GlossyBox and July Julep so stay tuned for those.

And finally…

~ My song discussion of the day is all about how much I am in love with Imagine Dragon’s “Radioactive” that is blowing up the airways at the moment. I’ve actually read in a couple of places that it’s being tagged as the “Rock Song of the Year” which I can see because it’s a really great song. I like the lyrics a lot, and like the bass drum line even more.

As I’m sure y’all have noticed, I don’t usually talk about songs here that I love unequivocally, and this one follows that trend. You see, I HATE the video for this song. I mean really, really hate it. The premise is a cock-fight setting with anthropomorphized stuffed animals, and the champion literally tears the losers to shreds. I know it’s fake, and that it’s just stuffed animals, but I just don’t like the premise at all. Lou Diamond Phillips makes a very sleazy-looking cameo in the video as the operator of the fight ring, and eventually receives his come-uppance. Even so, nothing about the video is redeeming even though the song is absolutely fantastic. It just goes to show that videos don’t necessarily improve songs, but at least seem to no longer hurt their performance.

So, that’s all the randomness I have coming forth today. I actually am working on some homework at the moment as well so I’ve got to get back to it.  Thanks for reading.  Blog at you later!

Cheers, Shauna

Thursday Thoughts – 7/4/13

Ramblings of a Suburban Mom

Today, I’m linking up again with my bloggy friend, Jen, over at Ramblings of a Suburban Mom.

~ Today is the 4th of July, and we had totally planned to check out the fireworks at Epcot tonight.  Unfortunately,we’ve had thunderstorms most of the day and it’s 90+ degrees with almost 100% humidity outside, so we decided we’d rather stay in than brave the elements.  I asked Roger if he was sad to miss the fireworks, but he pointed out that living here and me working at Walt Disney World means we can see fireworks at 2 different parks 365 days of the year, so we can always see them another day.  Basically, we just decided we’d go some other time when it’s not so crowded.  Yes, we realize we’re spoiled. 😉

~ I would have so loved to go out of town this weekend, but Roger has to work tomorrow, and I have a ton of school work due Sunday.  I think everyone should get to have the day after the 4th of July off, especially if that day is a Friday.  I’m trying to not be jealous of all my friends who are off visiting some place fun for the holiday.  Maybe I can convince Roger to head to the beach for the afternoon on Saturday.

~ After my dental torture on Monday, my endodontist told me to only eat soup and ice cream until I get my post and crown put in next week.  While my jaw, tooth and gums are definitely still sore on the right side of my mouth, I’ve had to break down and start eating other food with texture and flavor.  I’m SO. DONE. with soup.  Maybe if I had the Soup Nazi cooking me exciting variations every day, I would be able to choke it down more, but I seriously only have like 4 soups and 2 stews in my repertoire.  I totally need to develop more recipes for my next brush with the torturer dentist.

~ I’m going to work hard to get all of my homework done early this week so I can maybe spend some time doing something crafty.  I’m feeling a distinct need for a creative outlet so now I just have to etch out the time to do something.  I’m thinking stamping some cards, maybe making a scrapbook page or two, or trying out one of those Pinterest crafts I keep pinning obsessively.

~ After my jarring experience with WordPress shutting down my blog yesterday, I’ve been spending a lot of time researching options for self-hosting, site design and purchasing domains.  I honestly had no idea how involved the whole process really is so I can guarantee it’s going to be a while before anything changes.  When I do make the hop, I’m seriously considering changing the name of my blog as well to better fit the theme of what I actually talk about on here.  I’m just trying to decide if it’s a bad move to make a change like that after people have already become familiar with the old name.  I’d love to hear thoughts on this subject if anyone has any to share.

That’s pretty much it for my thoughts today.  Thanks for dropping by.  Blog at you later!

Cheers, Shauna

Feel-Good Friday

I spent most of today busy with homework and projects for my internship. Despite being busy, I definitely had a couple of feel good things to focus on today.

~ First off, I saw “Monsters University” today, and I loved it! The marching band cadences had me tapping my toes throughout the whole movie, and I really liked the short before it as well.

~ My natural nails are really soft and weak, so I did some research on something that might help, and found Nailtiques Formula 2. I’ve only been using it a couple of days, but my nails already feel better, and are less bendy.

~ Because my nails are less bendy, my manicure is staying on way better. I’m loving this lilac polish!

Color Club “Pardon My French”

Please disregard my horrible manicure. I was in a hurry before the movie, and forgot to push back my cuticles.

~ I’m pretty sure I’ve solidified my last internship that I need for school, so I won’t have to stress about that any more. It will be with the company I’m currently with, and I might even make commission off my sales. Extra cash would be nice.

~ And finally, my books for this term’s classes arrived today so I won’t have to stress about having them any more. Studying doesn’t make me feel good, but having the tools I need to be successful does.

What are the things you are feeling good about this Friday? Share your comments below, and have a great day! Blog at you later!

Thursday Thoughts – 6/27/13

Ramblings of a Suburban Mom

Today, I’m linking up with my bloggy friend, Jen, over at Ramblings of a Suburban Mom. Her blog is totally fun, and seriously has the most comprehensive list of subscription boxes I’ve found anywhere, so go check her out!

~ I was completely, over the moon excited to receive my first Birchbox (pics and initial review coming soon!) That is, until I opened it and discovered that they think I’m old. Seriously, 2 out of the 5 products were for aging this, that or the other. Now, I will admit that some days I feel older than others, but I never feel old, and I can’t figure out why Birchbox has pegged me that way either. I even went back in to check my profile selections, and the “Aging” category was not checked so I’m really not sure why I got all this “aging” stuff. The real bummer about it is that I didn’t get any of the goodies I was super looking forward to such as the Davines hair samples or the Suki scrub. BB has to be really good next month, or I don’t see myself sticking with them for long.

~ Who here watches Pretty Little Liars?

Pretty Little Liars

Please tell me I’m not the only one. Anyone read the books? Anyway, are you not completely loving all the reveals they’ve had going on so far this season? With all the new info and what has already happened, does anybody think that Ali’s mom might be A? OR, do you think they’re trying to set up for the same angle that went down in the books? I don’t want to write about it because I don’t want to give away any spoilers, but come on! That has to be what they’re going for, right? Too creepy if they do, because they won’t be able to carry the same storyline on the show that they did in the books because the two have already diverged SO MUCH. I’m not looking forward to the end of the Summer Season and that crazy, long wait until next January.

~ I think I have to just come out and admit that I am completely addicted to nail polish. The problem is that I just joined the Julep Maven program, AND I can’t stop buying OPI polishes everywhere I see them, and the small container I bought for them years ago just doesn’t hold all of my polish any more. I don’t have a wall I can mount a polish shelf on so I need to come up with some other kind of storage, but I can’t figure out what. I was thinking a train case, but don’t want to spend $40+ on one. Plus, Roger’s eyes bugged out tonight when he saw me looking at one at Ulta, and found out they cost that much for an EMPTY case. He totally thought I was joking, and they were full of makeup. Too funny! So, I’m basically looking for suggestions on ways to store my growing nail polish and accoutrements collection as well as all of the new makeup I’m amassing from my subscriptions. Please, share your ideas!

~ I haven’t had a ton of time to read this summer due to my class and internship schedule, but I did pick up a couple of books at the library last weekend. Right now, I’m reading the Jane Austen Mystery series, and yes, it’s THAT Jane Austen.

The books are set in the era of Pride and Prejudice, and feature the fictional diaries of Jane Austen as she recounts her tales of solving mysteries throughout the England of her time period. Author Stephanie Barron (the pen name for Francine Mathews,) does a great job of writing in the language of the time, and keeping with the feel of Austen’s real novels. The first book in the series is, “Jane and the Unpleasantness at Scargrave Manor,” which is the one I’ve pictured here. I’m on the third book in the series, and I find them to be absolutely charming. If you were like me, and wished that you could peek into Elizabeth and Darcy’s lives forever, you will likely enjoy this series as well.

~ I’ve been feeling kind of down lately, and finally pegged the reason for it today. I figured out that I’ve basically been in class non-stop except for a few 2-week breaks since May 2012. I’m getting ridiculously burnt out, and have a wicked case of cabin fever. Of course, there’s not a lot I can do about it because I’m in the middle of another set of classes right now, and can’t really go anywhere. I’ll have a break between Summer and Fall semesters, but it’s another 2-week break, and I’ll have to work. I guess I’m just bummed because I won’t be graduating for another 3 semesters after this one, so I’m looking at solid homework, studying and tests through December 2014, and it’s just making me tired. I’m going to have to plan something fun for Winter or Spring Break, or I’m going to go nuts.

That’s pretty much it for today’s thoughts. I’m working on my Julep post right now, and should have it up tonight. In the meantime, thanks for reading. Blog at you later!

Cheers, Shauna

Random Monday 6/24/13

Random Monday @NotInadequate

“Monday is an awful way to spend 1/7 of your life.”

I’m super feeling this quote today, and just had to add it here. It’s exceedingly appropriate for my mood.

Once again, I’m linking up with my bloggy friend Deb, over at Not Inadequate for a little beginning of the week randomness.

– My new classes for the second half of the Summer semester began today, and I’m already cranky. They’re super-accelerated because they cram 16 weeks of material into 6 weeks. All of my classes this term are online which I normally love. Of course, I only love it if the professors are organized, and I’ve already realized one is, and one isn’t. As an event and hospitality management major, I will admit that my classes aren’t exactly rocket science, especially since I already have experience in the field. Still, some can be pretty challenging, especially with the short time frame.

Today, the professor for my most difficult class emailed to let us know that he is at a conference, and won’t be posting any info about the class until Wednesday at the earliest. He went on to assure us that it would be OK because we won’t have any assignments due this week. This is NOT ok because it means he will be packing 16 weeks of work into 5 weeks instead of the measly 6 weeks we are supposed to get. I am annoyed by this. Somehow, I’m sure there will be more info to come on this topic.

– Speaking of school, I am quite pleased to note that I have received solid As in both of my first term classes, so I’m 50% of the way to my goal of a 4.0 for the Summer term. President’s List is SO CLOSE I can taste it!

– I got the sneak peek email for July’s ipsy bag, and it has a full size Benefit Cosmetics Benetint! I love Benefit, and swear by their mascara, They’re Real!, and I’m a big fan of this product also, so I’m super-excited. I can’t wait!

– I spent the better part of two days working on a scholarship application, and stressed all over to get it submitted by the deadline, only to find out the deadline was extended by two weeks. I guess that’s nice, but I’m irritable that they said people who submitted by the original deadline won’t get bonus points for submitting when we were supposed to. I know that sounds petty, but there’s a lot of money up for grabs, and I could really use some of it.

– I had a great time this weekend on my mini-Summer break, but I didn’t get much done around here so now I feel behind. I just have to finish editing my Julep box pics, and that review will be ready to go. I also picked out the cutest pics of the furbabies to feature in their intro post, and I am working up a post about our visit to the Kennedy Space Center. I’m hoping to get two of those three up tomorrow, plus fix whatever craziness is happening with my Categories section.

– And finally…

– My current song captivation of the week is centered around the new Daft Punk song, “Get Lucky”. This one also features Pharrell singing the most blatant hook-up lyrics I think I’ve come across. I honestly didn’t care at all for the song until Roger pointed out how catchy the completely inappropriate lyrics were, but now I inexplicably find myself singing it at random moments. Yes, the lines are totally wrong, but it’s a complete ear worm, and I just can’t keep it out of my head!

That’s it for today’s randomness. Thanks for braving it with me. Blog at you later!

Cheers, Shauna

Random Monday (the First!)

Random Monday @NotInadequate

“It’s just another Manic Monday.
Wish it was Sunday.
Cause that’s my fun day.
My “I don’t have to run day.”
It’s just another Manic Monday.”

Gotta thank The Bangles for this particular catchy tune because truer words were never spoken, especially about today. I’d go into all the horrors, but I’m trying to block them from my memory.

Anyway, here’s my first, official Random Monday! It’s something my bloggy friend, Deb, over at Not Inadequate does every week, and I finally get to participate now that I have a blog! I’m pretty much over the moon about this occurrence even though I wish my day was taking a hike out of the solar system on the tail of a comet.

(Just a note: Deb over at Not Inadequate is hilarious. If you are looking for someone who is a wise-cracking, craft-making, freezer-cooking, home-schooling mom, definitely check out her blog. Soon!)

So, without further ado, here’s my randomness, ready to roll!

– I had the pleasure of taking a nap yesterday while Roger went off to see yet another superhero movie (Man of Steel.) I was a bit cold when he came to kiss me good-bye, and I asked if he could grab me a blanket. As he wafted it in the air to spread it over the bed, it flew a little higher than anticipated, and hit the ceiling fan. I guess it must have wrapped around a blade because it sheered off the arm, which went tumbling end over end, and came to final rest about 2 inches from my nose in between our pillows. (No, it didn’t hit me, but it DID come a little close for comfort.)

Now, this particular fan was left in the house by a previous owner, and has to be AT LEAST from 1983. Roger tried to find replacement arms at the hardware store that would work in a pinch, but the spacing was off so we have to find a new fan for the bedroom. I’m not upset that we have to get a new fan, but I am upset that it will probably be a couple of weeks before we can get it hung, and I have this to look at in the meantime.

My missing fan

My missing fan

– This week is finals week for the first term of the Summer semester. I’m only taking two classes right now (plus an Internship, which is an entirely different post,) so I only have 1 final, plus some sort of final practicum in one of my event classes. What’s killing me is the enormous group project I’m also working on for the event class as well as the enormous project I’m working on for my internship. This much stuff going on in one week during the summer should not be allowed.

– Did you hear about all the GLOSSYBOX drama with the June “American Beauty” box that was supposed to have a full size, special edition Bondi New York nail polish? Well apparently, someone in the sandbox can’t play nice (between GLOSSYBOX, Dallas Shaw and Bondi) so Bondi decided to pull out. Bondi’s owner is a class act, and released a PR statement on Friday so people wouldn’t be disappointed with them when they got their box without the polish, but GLOSSYBOX didn’t bother to inform us subscribers until this morning.

One of the reasons I finally pulled the trigger on ordering GLOSSYBOX this month is because I wanted one of those awesome polishes. They are impossible to find around here, and I knew I’d be getting one so I signed up despite my misgivings over increasingly large numbers of posts regarding delays, shrinking sample sizes and unsatisfactory customer service. After I found out that my box would not come bearing a Bondi, I just decided to call GLOSSYBOX and cancel my order. Their customer service rep was very nice, and took care of it immediately. I’m not saying I won’t try them at some point in the future, but it’s not going to be this month. Instead, I think I’ll just keep an eye on how they recover from this particular PR nightmare, and also see if they can get their act together with shipping delays, contents, etc. If not, there are definitely some other options waiting in the wings.

The only good news in all of this is that Bondi’s president has said that they will be packaging these limited edition colors in their regular bottles for release in July, and the Bondi NY Facebook page has been posting some interesting questions that make me think the wind might be blowing in the direction of a Bondi subscription box service in the near future. This makes me super happy as I love their colors, the fact they are a 5-free polish so good for me and the environment, and they donate a ton of money to charitable organizations. I definitely see myself ordering directly from their site in the future, and can also see myself subbing to any box they decide to sell.

– So, yes, I live in Florida, and yes, the state is a peninsula surrounded on three sides by water. Does that mean, however Mother Nature, that you must use all of this water around us to be the bearer of all the daily, horrible thunderstorms we’ve been having the past three weeks? Also, I know we as humans do awful things to your world, but do you have to keep crashing air masses together right over the portion of the state I live in so that random, terrible thunderstorms literally form out of nowhere each afternoon/evening, and dump water on us without any advance warning?

I know we whine at you that we need the rain when you don’t send it, but must you send all of it at once? My hair has been a massive frizzball, and has looked like I’ve been rubbing balloons on it for three weeks, and the entire state is starting to smell more than a little moldy. Plus, the air is so filled with water that I can get a drink by inhaling. Can we be done now for a little bit? Please?

– Roger and I DVR the VH1 Top 20 Video Countdown because I love music, and it’s one of the only places to reliably see new videos of popular songs. The last three or four weeks has featured Robin Thicke’s new song, “Blurred Lines” featuring Pharrell and TI. The video for this song is so horrible that we fast forward through it the minute it comes on. Unfortunately, the song is unbearably catchy, and has been circling around in my head for DAYS. I’m about to go ride It’s a Small World just to catch a new ear worm.

Also, while I have no idea who Pharrell and TI are, Robin Thicke is unmistakable. Not because of his voice or singing style, but because he looks SO MUCH like his dad, Alan Thicke, from Growing Pains fame. The likeness never used to bother me, but I think he’s looking more like his dad the older he gets, and that’s just too creepy, especially when he’s trying to look all broody and sexy in his videos. Instead, he just looks like a lecher drooling over the scantily clad models in the video. Blech!

– And finally…

– Julep is having their first ever warehouse sale with some amazing prices like individual colors for $3.00, and duos for $6.00. It’s one day only so definitely go check it out. They are giving a free Julep v-neck t-shirt with every $75 purchase as well so you’ll be able to score fashion for your nails AND body. Check it out here!

Thanks for roaming the random road with me. Blog at you later!

Cheers, Shauna
