Meet the Furbabies!

It’s time to meet the cutest members of the family – our Furbabies! We have three – two kitties and one pup – and they are all immensely spoiled rotten well-loved. I’m doing this post today in honor of the 5 year anniversary of our pup’s Gotcha Day (the day we brought her home.) So, without further ado, here come the fuzzies!

Our first baby was Arkhe (pronounced R-K). We brought him home on September 27, 1999. We are pretty sure he was almost exactly 6 weeks old, as his mom was a stray that adopted a friend of ours. We picked him out of his litter because he was super adventurous and really playful. Sadly, all of Arkhe’s baby pictures are pre-digital so I can’t show you how completely precious he was as a baby, but here are grown-up pics.

Yes, this is my mouse. Why do you ask?

If you are thinking he looks like a big kitty, you are absolutely right. His head is the size of small navel orange, and his paws are an inch wide. He’s also a gorgeous tiger kitty who has been sleeping between our pillows since he was a baby. It was much cuter and more convenient when he was a baby, but not quite as adorable now that he weighs 18 pounds. One of his favorite things to do is dig under covers and sleep. He’s never happy when I wake him up taking pictures.

Sleepy Arkhe

Mommy, is this really necessary?

While Arkhe loves Mommy, he’s a Daddy’s kitty. He loves to lounge on Daddy for scritchies. Again, it was super-cute when he was little, but now it’s 18 pounds of kitty. Still, Roger doesn’t mind, and honestly enjoys it if the truth be known.

Pet me Daddy! I’m adorable!

Phelia (pronounced Fee-lee-a) was the second addition to our family. He was actually a teeny-tiny stray the first time I saw him sitting on a curb in the parking lot of my office building. Roger was driving me to work, and the kitty meowed at me as we drove past. At the time, Roger worked across the freeway, and I gave him just enough time to get to work before I called him and told him to get the kitty. Even though he only weighed 1.6 pounds, he left a massive scar on Roger’s hand from where he bit him as he was trying to catch him. That was in June 2000, and he’s been with us ever since.

Like Arkhe, all of Phelia’s baby pics are in hard copy so here’s an adult pic. We don’t really know exactly how old he is, but the vet said he was between 6 and 9 weeks when we got him which means he’s about 9 months younger than Arkhe.

I find these photos distasteful.

Even though he’s 13 years old and has lived with us almost his entire life, he’s still a bit skittish. He also has the ability to find every comfy spot in the house to nap, including stealing the blanket off the couch every day to mush into a nest for his naptime.

Did you want this blanket? Too bad!

Phelia is the only pet in our house that considers Mommy his, but he doesn’t cuddle with me the way Arkhe does with Roger. Still, he curls up on the arm of the couch next to me, or next to my pillows to be near me, and will sometimes even nap on me. He’s my super-purry kitty, and you can seriously hear him purring from across the room. I just love it when he comes over and purrs near me as I find it totally relaxing.

Yes, I am this cute in real life.

Arkhe has never really forgiven us for bringing Phelia home, and still gets irritated with him on a regular basis. And if you say Phelia’s name in Arkhe’s presence, Arkhe will actually get up and leave from sheer irritation. Despite the occasional annoyance, they are still best buddies, and completely love each other.

Kitty Cuddles

What? We were cold.

You can totally tell the size difference between the two of them in these pics. Phelia is a petite 9.5 to 10 pounds, and Arkhe is twice that size!

And now for our latest addition, Gracie. Five years ago, our lives changed completely when we brought this little cutie pie home.

Baby Gracie!

4 months old and adorable!

Hall’s Her Grace, Duchess Ophelia Ann (pronounced O-fee-lee-A) is a Tri-color Black & Tan Toy Fox Terrier. Amertoys look a little like a cross between Chihuahuas and Jack Russell Terriers, but are not obnoxious like Chihuahuas and aren’t as high energy as Jacks. My co-workers thought she looked like a cow because of her white coat with big black spots so they called her a cowhuahua. Regardless of what we call her, she’s adorable and knows it because Roger tells her that she is all the time. I wanted to call her Duchess, but Roger hated the name so we went with the uber-original tried and true Gracie.

I had to work really hard to convince Roger to get a dog in the first place, but it didn’t take him long to fall in love with her. In fact, this pic was taken about 20 minutes after we brought her home the first day, and was just the beginning of the end of a serious case of puppy love.

Daddy and Gracie - Day 1

I’m cute and I know it.

Terriers are super-loyal, and while Gracie loves us both, her sun rises and sets around her Daddy.

Gracie and Daddy

You’re my favorite Daddy.

However, she will still cuddle with me if Daddy is not around, or if she doesn’t feel well because Daddies are for playing, but Mommies are for comfort.

Mommy Cuddles

I like Mommy, too.

The average size for Toy Fox Terriers is 5 to 8 pounds, but Gracie stands a full head above all of her siblings and mom, and weighs a whopping 11 pounds. We can’t quite figure out why that is because she’s pure-bred, and gets plenty of exercise. In fact, she pretty much gets daily sessions of playing fetch as it is her most favorite thing in the world to do other than cuddling. This is the look we get when she’s waiting for us to throw something.

Throw the Ball!

Throw the Ball!

Gracie loves playing with Roger, and she is always the fastest pup her size at the Dog Park. But when it comes to cuddling, her favorite spot is between us in her bed on the couch or under the covers in our bed. She’s a total cuddle-bug, and I LOVE that about her.

So what if my tongue is sticking out? I’m comfy!

I love my blanket.

The boys don’t really love Gracie as much as we do. In fact, Arkhe mostly ignores her, and Phelia kinda smacks at her when she annoys him which is pretty much all the time. Phelia and Gracie sometimes play together, but it’s a tentative relationship at best, and open hostility at worst.

We kind of mock the uneasy relationship between the cats and dog by referring to Gracie from the cat’s perspective as the stupid, ugly, smelly cat because she is a really stupid cat who doesn’t look right and stinks. Of course, when we talk about the cats from the dog’s perspective, we call Arkhe the big, scary one and Phelia the mean one.

Even though everyone mostly gets along, our house is never dull. There is always someone wanting to be fed, wanting attention, wanting to play, etc. It can be a bit crazy around here, but I love all of these cute, cuddly faces to bits, and can’t imagine life without them.

Thanks for reading! Blog at you later!

Lazy Day

“Roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer
Those days of soda and pretzels and beer
Roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer
You’ll wish that summer could always be here”

Honestly, summer is NOT my favorite season and I would never wish for it perpetually, (mostly because I wilt like a snowdrop in the heat), but songwriters Charles Tobias and Hans Carste sure captured the lazy feeling that comes with a hot summer day.

Speaking of lazy days, I’m excited to be having one today. Roger and I decided to do the Kennedy Space Center tour tomorrow, and instead spend the day relaxing and catching up with some stuff here at home. So, in between loads of laundry and some light kitchen reorganization, I’m going to work on sprucing things up around here a bit more, give myself a nice manicure, and watch a movie. I know I also need to back up my iPhone and iPad, and do some app pruning and reorganization, and I need to spend some time dealing with my hair which is reeling from all the humidity of late.

I also plan to get my Julep Maven box reveal posted, as well as do a post about the furbabies as they have not made an appearance yet, and NEED to be introduced. There are a couple more product reviews I need to get up as well including one for Redken Argan 10, as well as a new moisturizer.

Mostly though, I’m going to just hang with my hubby ’cause I don’t feel like we have a lot of time to just be together during the week due to all the added pressures of living, and I miss him. I find it amazing that living can so often get in the way of life, and there are times when you just need to slow down, take a breather and reassess. For me, remembering that I get to go to sleep and wake up next to my best friend every day makes me feel lucky and blessed. It was one of the things I reflected on yesterday as part of my Solstice celebration.

So today, I’m going to put day-to-day living on the back burner, and enjoy life as much as I can. I hope everyone else has the chance to do the same. Blog at you later!

Feel-Good Friday

I have several things to feel good about this Friday!

– Today is the Summer Solstice, which means the days are going to start getting shorter. I LOVE this time of year because I love Autumn which means FOOTBALL SEASON! Because I am ALWAYS ready for some football!

– Since the classes from the first term of the Summer semester ended yesterday, and my new classes don’t start until Monday, I am technically on my “Summer Break” this weekend. It’s short, but I’m going to enjoy it!

– I have my Julep Maven box waiting to be opened, and reviewed. I decided to wait until today when I would have the time to use the polish immediately. This of course, also means I’m feeling good about doing my nails today!

– I received a shipping notification this morning letting me know that my first Birchbox is on its way, so that should be arriving sometime next week. Woohoo!

– We have some free passes to the Kennedy Space Center that must be used by the end of June, so we’re going to head over there this weekend. I’ve never been, but Roger visited when he was a kid after his parents picked him up from Space Camp. (Yes, you read that right; he did indeed go to Space Camp.) Either way, it should be fun, and I intend to be sure we stop by the beach for a quick splash in the Atlantic before heading back home.

– I have a new camera that I’ve not had the chance to really try out with an actual destination so I’ll finally be able to put it through its paces at KSC and the beach.

– This little gem:

Monsters University

opens in theatres today, and I can’t wait to see it. I loved Monsters Inc., and am excited to see the character development in this movie, and how it will tie in to that one.

– We got the replacement fan hung in our bedroom so I’m able to finally sleep a bit more comfortably. Even better, this one has a light kit with it, so we finally have overhead light in our bedroom instead of just lamplight.

– And finally, today marks my one-week blogiversary, and I’m happy to say that I’m up to 10 followers in a mere 7 days! It’s a lovely feeling knowing that my writing is not just floating out into the ether with no one but me to read it. I’ve been swamped, so haven’t had time to read and comment on all of the blogs I follow, plus new ones, but I’m working through my list, and will get to everyone asap. A big thanks to everyone who is willing to brave the random!

So as you can see, I have a lot to be feeling good about. Please take a moment to let me know why your Friday is Feel-Good in the comments section below. Blog at you later!

Happy Summer Solstice!

The Summer Solstice for the Northern Hemisphere began today, June 21, 2013, at 1:04am Eastern time. In addition to representing the longest day of each year and the shortest night, the Summer Solstice or Midsummer as it used to be called, is the official beginning of the Earth’s movement towards Autumn (my favorite season), and the Winter Solstice (my favorite holiday.)

We celebrate Midsummer by sowing the seeds of changes we wish to make in our lives, much as we sow seeds for the crops grown during the Summer. It is also a time to be reminded of how precious every day and every season is as we acknowledge the beginning of the season passing away once more. Lastly, this day is a time to appreciate the gifts in our lives rather than taking them for granted.

In ancient times, the Summer Solstice was celebrated with feasting and a bonfire, but modern celebrations include things like fireworks. So go enjoy this longest day of 2013, have a barbecue and celebrate the season of long, lazy days. As dusk descends, light a bonfire, a sparkler or even a candle, choose something you’d like to change in your life in the upcoming months, and reflect upon your blessings.

I wish you all a wonderful Summer Solstice. Blessed be to you and yours!

Cheers, Shauna

Random Monday (the First!)

Random Monday @NotInadequate

“It’s just another Manic Monday.
Wish it was Sunday.
Cause that’s my fun day.
My “I don’t have to run day.”
It’s just another Manic Monday.”

Gotta thank The Bangles for this particular catchy tune because truer words were never spoken, especially about today. I’d go into all the horrors, but I’m trying to block them from my memory.

Anyway, here’s my first, official Random Monday! It’s something my bloggy friend, Deb, over at Not Inadequate does every week, and I finally get to participate now that I have a blog! I’m pretty much over the moon about this occurrence even though I wish my day was taking a hike out of the solar system on the tail of a comet.

(Just a note: Deb over at Not Inadequate is hilarious. If you are looking for someone who is a wise-cracking, craft-making, freezer-cooking, home-schooling mom, definitely check out her blog. Soon!)

So, without further ado, here’s my randomness, ready to roll!

– I had the pleasure of taking a nap yesterday while Roger went off to see yet another superhero movie (Man of Steel.) I was a bit cold when he came to kiss me good-bye, and I asked if he could grab me a blanket. As he wafted it in the air to spread it over the bed, it flew a little higher than anticipated, and hit the ceiling fan. I guess it must have wrapped around a blade because it sheered off the arm, which went tumbling end over end, and came to final rest about 2 inches from my nose in between our pillows. (No, it didn’t hit me, but it DID come a little close for comfort.)

Now, this particular fan was left in the house by a previous owner, and has to be AT LEAST from 1983. Roger tried to find replacement arms at the hardware store that would work in a pinch, but the spacing was off so we have to find a new fan for the bedroom. I’m not upset that we have to get a new fan, but I am upset that it will probably be a couple of weeks before we can get it hung, and I have this to look at in the meantime.

My missing fan

My missing fan

– This week is finals week for the first term of the Summer semester. I’m only taking two classes right now (plus an Internship, which is an entirely different post,) so I only have 1 final, plus some sort of final practicum in one of my event classes. What’s killing me is the enormous group project I’m also working on for the event class as well as the enormous project I’m working on for my internship. This much stuff going on in one week during the summer should not be allowed.

– Did you hear about all the GLOSSYBOX drama with the June “American Beauty” box that was supposed to have a full size, special edition Bondi New York nail polish? Well apparently, someone in the sandbox can’t play nice (between GLOSSYBOX, Dallas Shaw and Bondi) so Bondi decided to pull out. Bondi’s owner is a class act, and released a PR statement on Friday so people wouldn’t be disappointed with them when they got their box without the polish, but GLOSSYBOX didn’t bother to inform us subscribers until this morning.

One of the reasons I finally pulled the trigger on ordering GLOSSYBOX this month is because I wanted one of those awesome polishes. They are impossible to find around here, and I knew I’d be getting one so I signed up despite my misgivings over increasingly large numbers of posts regarding delays, shrinking sample sizes and unsatisfactory customer service. After I found out that my box would not come bearing a Bondi, I just decided to call GLOSSYBOX and cancel my order. Their customer service rep was very nice, and took care of it immediately. I’m not saying I won’t try them at some point in the future, but it’s not going to be this month. Instead, I think I’ll just keep an eye on how they recover from this particular PR nightmare, and also see if they can get their act together with shipping delays, contents, etc. If not, there are definitely some other options waiting in the wings.

The only good news in all of this is that Bondi’s president has said that they will be packaging these limited edition colors in their regular bottles for release in July, and the Bondi NY Facebook page has been posting some interesting questions that make me think the wind might be blowing in the direction of a Bondi subscription box service in the near future. This makes me super happy as I love their colors, the fact they are a 5-free polish so good for me and the environment, and they donate a ton of money to charitable organizations. I definitely see myself ordering directly from their site in the future, and can also see myself subbing to any box they decide to sell.

– So, yes, I live in Florida, and yes, the state is a peninsula surrounded on three sides by water. Does that mean, however Mother Nature, that you must use all of this water around us to be the bearer of all the daily, horrible thunderstorms we’ve been having the past three weeks? Also, I know we as humans do awful things to your world, but do you have to keep crashing air masses together right over the portion of the state I live in so that random, terrible thunderstorms literally form out of nowhere each afternoon/evening, and dump water on us without any advance warning?

I know we whine at you that we need the rain when you don’t send it, but must you send all of it at once? My hair has been a massive frizzball, and has looked like I’ve been rubbing balloons on it for three weeks, and the entire state is starting to smell more than a little moldy. Plus, the air is so filled with water that I can get a drink by inhaling. Can we be done now for a little bit? Please?

– Roger and I DVR the VH1 Top 20 Video Countdown because I love music, and it’s one of the only places to reliably see new videos of popular songs. The last three or four weeks has featured Robin Thicke’s new song, “Blurred Lines” featuring Pharrell and TI. The video for this song is so horrible that we fast forward through it the minute it comes on. Unfortunately, the song is unbearably catchy, and has been circling around in my head for DAYS. I’m about to go ride It’s a Small World just to catch a new ear worm.

Also, while I have no idea who Pharrell and TI are, Robin Thicke is unmistakable. Not because of his voice or singing style, but because he looks SO MUCH like his dad, Alan Thicke, from Growing Pains fame. The likeness never used to bother me, but I think he’s looking more like his dad the older he gets, and that’s just too creepy, especially when he’s trying to look all broody and sexy in his videos. Instead, he just looks like a lecher drooling over the scantily clad models in the video. Blech!

– And finally…

– Julep is having their first ever warehouse sale with some amazing prices like individual colors for $3.00, and duos for $6.00. It’s one day only so definitely go check it out. They are giving a free Julep v-neck t-shirt with every $75 purchase as well so you’ll be able to score fashion for your nails AND body. Check it out here!

Thanks for roaming the random road with me. Blog at you later!
