Random is Order

"Creativity is the ability to introduce order into the randomness of nature." ~ Eric Hoffer

Random Monday 7/1/13

Random Monday @NotInadequate

“Every other day, every other day,
Every other day of the week is fine, yeah
But whenever Monday comes, but whenever Monday comes
You can find me cryin’ all of the time”

This The Mamas and the Papas song written by John Phillips is SO appropriate for me today! This has been the worst Monday I’ve experienced in recent years.

Once again, I’m linking up with my bloggy friend Deb, over at Not Inadequate for some Monday randomness.

~ I got to spend all morning at a Florida DMV office getting new tags for our Jeep. Roger has kept putting off registering it in Florida, and it was finally picked up for expired tags this weekend. Approximately $800, two trips to an impound lot and 3 hours in a DMV waiting room later, and we now have two Florida registered vehicles. What a shame we’re planning to move back to California in less than 2 years.

Florida License Plate

~ I got zero sleep last night due to a completely horrific toothache. My tooth and jaw were literally throbbing so bad that I couldn’t lay my head down at all because even the pressure on the opposite side of my head was unbearable. No sleep made my morning at the DMV SO MUCH BETTER (not).

~ We are planning to do lots of Walt Disney World fireworks this week in honor of the 4th of July. So far, we think we’ll be taking in the Magic Kingdom fireworks on July 3, and then spending the 4th of July at Epcot for their awesome display. The only issue with this is the weather forecast which is currently showing rain, rain and more rain for the whole week.

~ I finally got my first Julep review up yesterday, and actually have my July Julep Maven box sitting here waiting to be opened. I had planned to open it and take pics this afternoon, but those plans got waylaid by a very unhappy circumstance that I will be posting about separately. I also sampled the last of the items I received in my June Birchbox, so that review will be getting posted in the next couple of days as well.

And finally…

~ Today’s song post is about the new Ke$ha and Will.i.am collaboration, “Crazy Kids.” I absolutely love the chorus of this song, but completely hate Ke$ha’s obnoxious sing-songy annoying spoken word cadence that she does in her songs. Because I enjoy the chorus so much, I have completely mixed feelings about this song, wanting to turn it up to sing along with one part, but wanting to change the station for the rest. I think this is quite possibly the most bipolar response I’ve ever had to a song, and it confuses me. The most frustrating thing for me about the whole situation is that I know Ke$ha can sing well, but chooses to do her annoying sing-songy nonsense. Ugh!

That’s all the random I have for today. I actually have another post coming up shortly about a very not-random situation that occurred this afternoon, so stay tuned for that to be posted soon as well. Thanks for dropping by! Blog at you later!

Random Monday 6/24/13

Random Monday @NotInadequate

“Monday is an awful way to spend 1/7 of your life.”

I’m super feeling this quote today, and just had to add it here. It’s exceedingly appropriate for my mood.

Once again, I’m linking up with my bloggy friend Deb, over at Not Inadequate for a little beginning of the week randomness.

– My new classes for the second half of the Summer semester began today, and I’m already cranky. They’re super-accelerated because they cram 16 weeks of material into 6 weeks. All of my classes this term are online which I normally love. Of course, I only love it if the professors are organized, and I’ve already realized one is, and one isn’t. As an event and hospitality management major, I will admit that my classes aren’t exactly rocket science, especially since I already have experience in the field. Still, some can be pretty challenging, especially with the short time frame.

Today, the professor for my most difficult class emailed to let us know that he is at a conference, and won’t be posting any info about the class until Wednesday at the earliest. He went on to assure us that it would be OK because we won’t have any assignments due this week. This is NOT ok because it means he will be packing 16 weeks of work into 5 weeks instead of the measly 6 weeks we are supposed to get. I am annoyed by this. Somehow, I’m sure there will be more info to come on this topic.

– Speaking of school, I am quite pleased to note that I have received solid As in both of my first term classes, so I’m 50% of the way to my goal of a 4.0 for the Summer term. President’s List is SO CLOSE I can taste it!

– I got the sneak peek email for July’s ipsy bag, and it has a full size Benefit Cosmetics Benetint! I love Benefit, and swear by their mascara, They’re Real!, and I’m a big fan of this product also, so I’m super-excited. I can’t wait!

– I spent the better part of two days working on a scholarship application, and stressed all over to get it submitted by the deadline, only to find out the deadline was extended by two weeks. I guess that’s nice, but I’m irritable that they said people who submitted by the original deadline won’t get bonus points for submitting when we were supposed to. I know that sounds petty, but there’s a lot of money up for grabs, and I could really use some of it.

– I had a great time this weekend on my mini-Summer break, but I didn’t get much done around here so now I feel behind. I just have to finish editing my Julep box pics, and that review will be ready to go. I also picked out the cutest pics of the furbabies to feature in their intro post, and I am working up a post about our visit to the Kennedy Space Center. I’m hoping to get two of those three up tomorrow, plus fix whatever craziness is happening with my Categories section.

– And finally…

– My current song captivation of the week is centered around the new Daft Punk song, “Get Lucky”. This one also features Pharrell singing the most blatant hook-up lyrics I think I’ve come across. I honestly didn’t care at all for the song until Roger pointed out how catchy the completely inappropriate lyrics were, but now I inexplicably find myself singing it at random moments. Yes, the lines are totally wrong, but it’s a complete ear worm, and I just can’t keep it out of my head!

That’s it for today’s randomness. Thanks for braving it with me. Blog at you later!

Oh, but it’s a GOOD tired.

We made it over to Cape Canaveral today, and spent several hours at Kennedy Space Center. It was interesting for me, but Roger was like a kid in a candy store. I’ve never seen a grown man stare so longingly at a building as he did at the Vehicle Assembly Building as our bus tour drove by. I’m thinking there will be a tour of the VAB coming up in someone’s future. 😉

After we left KSC, we drove down to Cocoa Beach. Our initial plan was to check out the beach and ocean, but I was entirely too tired after wandering around the NASA complex for forever. As we were driving around, I saw a shave ice place. Now, Hawaiian shave ice is one of my most favorite things in the whole world, but is not very common way out here in Florida, so there was no question about stopping. I was so excited to get one that I didn’t even remember to take a pic which is most unusual for me. I am now sporting a blue tongue though, so you know it was yummo.

I was so tired from our excursion that I fell asleep on the car ride back, and pretty much passed out when we got home. Roger is also down for the count as well. While KSC isn’t HUGE, Florida is hot and humid, and doing anything outdoors just sucks the life out of you. The only saving grace was the wonderful ocean breeze that we just don’t get in Central Florida.

Still, despite the exhaustion, I think it’s safe to say that we both had fun. Roger got to spend time with stuff he loves, and I got to spend time with him, so it was a win-win all around. It was also nice to figure out how close KSC, Port Canaveral (the cruise ship terminal), and Cocoa Beach really are (definitely reasonable driving distance for shave ice!), so we’ve already started talking about cruises and return trips to KSC.

We are both pretty tired, but it’s the good kind. I see more visits to that side of the state in our future, but I think we both agree we will wait until it cools down. I will be posting some pics from today’s excursion at some point this week. In the meantime, I’m headed back to bed as my new classes start tomorrow, and I don’t want to be completely wiped for the first day.

I hope you all had a wonderful weekend that was either filled with tons of fun, or lots of R&R, or both, whichever you prefer. Thanks for dropping by. Blog at you later!

Lazy Day

“Roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer
Those days of soda and pretzels and beer
Roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer
You’ll wish that summer could always be here”

Honestly, summer is NOT my favorite season and I would never wish for it perpetually, (mostly because I wilt like a snowdrop in the heat), but songwriters Charles Tobias and Hans Carste sure captured the lazy feeling that comes with a hot summer day.

Speaking of lazy days, I’m excited to be having one today. Roger and I decided to do the Kennedy Space Center tour tomorrow, and instead spend the day relaxing and catching up with some stuff here at home. So, in between loads of laundry and some light kitchen reorganization, I’m going to work on sprucing things up around here a bit more, give myself a nice manicure, and watch a movie. I know I also need to back up my iPhone and iPad, and do some app pruning and reorganization, and I need to spend some time dealing with my hair which is reeling from all the humidity of late.

I also plan to get my Julep Maven box reveal posted, as well as do a post about the furbabies as they have not made an appearance yet, and NEED to be introduced. There are a couple more product reviews I need to get up as well including one for Redken Argan 10, as well as a new moisturizer.

Mostly though, I’m going to just hang with my hubby ’cause I don’t feel like we have a lot of time to just be together during the week due to all the added pressures of living, and I miss him. I find it amazing that living can so often get in the way of life, and there are times when you just need to slow down, take a breather and reassess. For me, remembering that I get to go to sleep and wake up next to my best friend every day makes me feel lucky and blessed. It was one of the things I reflected on yesterday as part of my Solstice celebration.

So today, I’m going to put day-to-day living on the back burner, and enjoy life as much as I can. I hope everyone else has the chance to do the same. Blog at you later!

Feel-Good Friday

I have several things to feel good about this Friday!

– Today is the Summer Solstice, which means the days are going to start getting shorter. I LOVE this time of year because I love Autumn which means FOOTBALL SEASON! Because I am ALWAYS ready for some football!

– Since the classes from the first term of the Summer semester ended yesterday, and my new classes don’t start until Monday, I am technically on my “Summer Break” this weekend. It’s short, but I’m going to enjoy it!

– I have my Julep Maven box waiting to be opened, and reviewed. I decided to wait until today when I would have the time to use the polish immediately. This of course, also means I’m feeling good about doing my nails today!

– I received a shipping notification this morning letting me know that my first Birchbox is on its way, so that should be arriving sometime next week. Woohoo!

– We have some free passes to the Kennedy Space Center that must be used by the end of June, so we’re going to head over there this weekend. I’ve never been, but Roger visited when he was a kid after his parents picked him up from Space Camp. (Yes, you read that right; he did indeed go to Space Camp.) Either way, it should be fun, and I intend to be sure we stop by the beach for a quick splash in the Atlantic before heading back home.

– I have a new camera that I’ve not had the chance to really try out with an actual destination so I’ll finally be able to put it through its paces at KSC and the beach.

– This little gem:

Monsters University

opens in theatres today, and I can’t wait to see it. I loved Monsters Inc., and am excited to see the character development in this movie, and how it will tie in to that one.

– We got the replacement fan hung in our bedroom so I’m able to finally sleep a bit more comfortably. Even better, this one has a light kit with it, so we finally have overhead light in our bedroom instead of just lamplight.

– And finally, today marks my one-week blogiversary, and I’m happy to say that I’m up to 10 followers in a mere 7 days! It’s a lovely feeling knowing that my writing is not just floating out into the ether with no one but me to read it. I’ve been swamped, so haven’t had time to read and comment on all of the blogs I follow, plus new ones, but I’m working through my list, and will get to everyone asap. A big thanks to everyone who is willing to brave the random!

So as you can see, I have a lot to be feeling good about. Please take a moment to let me know why your Friday is Feel-Good in the comments section below. Blog at you later!

TV Time!

I’m seriously addicted to what I can only refer to as fluffy TV. I spend so much of my life working, studying, networking and trying to have a normal home life while still finding time to sleep occasionally that I have very little time for letting my hair down. One of my biggest guilty pleasures is watching nothing but fluff on my rare bits of downtime.

I pretty much DVR everything I watch because: a) I am rarely home, and available to watch TV when something I want to watch is on, and b) I totally do not want to spend my rare TV time on commercials. Roger DVRs a lot of what he watches as well, but his stuff includes things like documentaries and random shows about fishing on the Discovery Channel. While the fishing shows he watches are basically a bunch of guys with foul mouths screaming at each other, the stuff I watch is infinitely worse in it’s own, silly way.

Basically, right now, my portion of the DVR is filled with Pretty Little Liars, Twisted, The Fosters, and copies of multiple Disney Channel half hour comedies. To see this in list form would probably make you think I was a pre-teen or a young adult at the most, but I obviously am not. I watch this stuff because it’s fluffy and I don’t have to think much about it. Plus, it makes me laugh and/or removes me from reality for a short time which is a nice break.

Not everything I watch is teen tv. I do have some high-brow fluff in the form of Downton Abbey, Season 3 to get through. Plus, I love some good reality TV in the form of So You Think You Can Dance, Project Runway and Top Chef. Basically, my requirement for reality TV is that the participants must be able to DO something, or have a skill. Otherwise, I try to avoid the genre. Well, if I’m being honest, I avoid MOST of the genre except for Dance Moms. I justify watching this by saying that I love watching the girls perform, which I do because I think they are all incredibly talented, and so young to be so good at what they do. Having said that, I truly watch it because it’s like a train wreck that I just can’t look away from. I honestly can’t figure out how much of it is staged for the show, and if it’s not staged, why on earth those mothers would expose their children to that type of environment. I understand wanting a talented teacher, but there are plenty out there who are really good at what they do, and who don’t scream at, belittle and play favorites with their students.

Anyway, that’s another topic for another post. In the meantime, I am SO happy that I took some time tonight to de-stress and watch TV after finishing my big group project and finals. On this week’s So You Think You Can Dance, the top 20 was revealed, and I was excited to see that the 6 I pegged for the show at their initial audition made it in. SYTYCD is my favorite summer series, and I both watch and vote religiously. I hate that they are keeping the one-day per week format that they introduced last season, but grateful it’s still around.

My other summer/winter obsession is Pretty Little Liars. I got sucked into this crazy mystery last summer when I watched Seasons 1 & 2 on Netflix, then caught up with 3 as it was being aired. I’ve read the books and know how they end, but the show is an entirely different animal. I just love everything about PLL, and can literally debate it endlessly with friends and co-workers. I have to admit that I’m dying to know who did it all, and I’m loving some of the reveal that occurred at the end of last season/beginning of this one. While I super want to solve the mystery, I don’t want the show to end so I’m mostly OK with the pace. I’m trying to figure out what they are going to do with the Aria/Ezra storyline though, because that whole situation broke my heart. I know it could never happen in real life, but the actor who plays Ezra is just TOO CUTE, and can’t go anywhere so they’ll just HAVE to get back together. 😉

So there you have it. My current summer TV obsessions which I’m sure are going to be quickly joined by The Fosters and Twisted on ABC Family. I’m already enjoying those shows and they are brand new, so it will be interesting to see what happens with them. I’m also super hoping ABC Family renews Bunheads because I love Amy Sherman-Palladino, and thought the show was too cute. I have a whole other set of Fall shows that I love as well, but that post can wait until the season gets a bit closer.

Do you watch fluffy TV? What are YOUR TV Time guilty pleasures? Leave me a comment in the box below, and let me know if you enjoy any of my silly and addictive shows. Blog at you later!

Random Monday (the First!)

Random Monday @NotInadequate

“It’s just another Manic Monday.
Wish it was Sunday.
Cause that’s my fun day.
My “I don’t have to run day.”
It’s just another Manic Monday.”

Gotta thank The Bangles for this particular catchy tune because truer words were never spoken, especially about today. I’d go into all the horrors, but I’m trying to block them from my memory.

Anyway, here’s my first, official Random Monday! It’s something my bloggy friend, Deb, over at Not Inadequate does every week, and I finally get to participate now that I have a blog! I’m pretty much over the moon about this occurrence even though I wish my day was taking a hike out of the solar system on the tail of a comet.

(Just a note: Deb over at Not Inadequate is hilarious. If you are looking for someone who is a wise-cracking, craft-making, freezer-cooking, home-schooling mom, definitely check out her blog. Soon!)

So, without further ado, here’s my randomness, ready to roll!

– I had the pleasure of taking a nap yesterday while Roger went off to see yet another superhero movie (Man of Steel.) I was a bit cold when he came to kiss me good-bye, and I asked if he could grab me a blanket. As he wafted it in the air to spread it over the bed, it flew a little higher than anticipated, and hit the ceiling fan. I guess it must have wrapped around a blade because it sheered off the arm, which went tumbling end over end, and came to final rest about 2 inches from my nose in between our pillows. (No, it didn’t hit me, but it DID come a little close for comfort.)

Now, this particular fan was left in the house by a previous owner, and has to be AT LEAST from 1983. Roger tried to find replacement arms at the hardware store that would work in a pinch, but the spacing was off so we have to find a new fan for the bedroom. I’m not upset that we have to get a new fan, but I am upset that it will probably be a couple of weeks before we can get it hung, and I have this to look at in the meantime.

My missing fan

My missing fan

– This week is finals week for the first term of the Summer semester. I’m only taking two classes right now (plus an Internship, which is an entirely different post,) so I only have 1 final, plus some sort of final practicum in one of my event classes. What’s killing me is the enormous group project I’m also working on for the event class as well as the enormous project I’m working on for my internship. This much stuff going on in one week during the summer should not be allowed.

– Did you hear about all the GLOSSYBOX drama with the June “American Beauty” box that was supposed to have a full size, special edition Bondi New York nail polish? Well apparently, someone in the sandbox can’t play nice (between GLOSSYBOX, Dallas Shaw and Bondi) so Bondi decided to pull out. Bondi’s owner is a class act, and released a PR statement on Friday so people wouldn’t be disappointed with them when they got their box without the polish, but GLOSSYBOX didn’t bother to inform us subscribers until this morning.

One of the reasons I finally pulled the trigger on ordering GLOSSYBOX this month is because I wanted one of those awesome polishes. They are impossible to find around here, and I knew I’d be getting one so I signed up despite my misgivings over increasingly large numbers of posts regarding delays, shrinking sample sizes and unsatisfactory customer service. After I found out that my box would not come bearing a Bondi, I just decided to call GLOSSYBOX and cancel my order. Their customer service rep was very nice, and took care of it immediately. I’m not saying I won’t try them at some point in the future, but it’s not going to be this month. Instead, I think I’ll just keep an eye on how they recover from this particular PR nightmare, and also see if they can get their act together with shipping delays, contents, etc. If not, there are definitely some other options waiting in the wings.

The only good news in all of this is that Bondi’s president has said that they will be packaging these limited edition colors in their regular bottles for release in July, and the Bondi NY Facebook page has been posting some interesting questions that make me think the wind might be blowing in the direction of a Bondi subscription box service in the near future. This makes me super happy as I love their colors, the fact they are a 5-free polish so good for me and the environment, and they donate a ton of money to charitable organizations. I definitely see myself ordering directly from their site in the future, and can also see myself subbing to any box they decide to sell.

– So, yes, I live in Florida, and yes, the state is a peninsula surrounded on three sides by water. Does that mean, however Mother Nature, that you must use all of this water around us to be the bearer of all the daily, horrible thunderstorms we’ve been having the past three weeks? Also, I know we as humans do awful things to your world, but do you have to keep crashing air masses together right over the portion of the state I live in so that random, terrible thunderstorms literally form out of nowhere each afternoon/evening, and dump water on us without any advance warning?

I know we whine at you that we need the rain when you don’t send it, but must you send all of it at once? My hair has been a massive frizzball, and has looked like I’ve been rubbing balloons on it for three weeks, and the entire state is starting to smell more than a little moldy. Plus, the air is so filled with water that I can get a drink by inhaling. Can we be done now for a little bit? Please?

– Roger and I DVR the VH1 Top 20 Video Countdown because I love music, and it’s one of the only places to reliably see new videos of popular songs. The last three or four weeks has featured Robin Thicke’s new song, “Blurred Lines” featuring Pharrell and TI. The video for this song is so horrible that we fast forward through it the minute it comes on. Unfortunately, the song is unbearably catchy, and has been circling around in my head for DAYS. I’m about to go ride It’s a Small World just to catch a new ear worm.

Also, while I have no idea who Pharrell and TI are, Robin Thicke is unmistakable. Not because of his voice or singing style, but because he looks SO MUCH like his dad, Alan Thicke, from Growing Pains fame. The likeness never used to bother me, but I think he’s looking more like his dad the older he gets, and that’s just too creepy, especially when he’s trying to look all broody and sexy in his videos. Instead, he just looks like a lecher drooling over the scantily clad models in the video. Blech!

– And finally…

– Julep is having their first ever warehouse sale with some amazing prices like individual colors for $3.00, and duos for $6.00. It’s one day only so definitely go check it out. They are giving a free Julep v-neck t-shirt with every $75 purchase as well so you’ll be able to score fashion for your nails AND body. Check it out here!

Thanks for roaming the random road with me. Blog at you later!

Cheers, Shauna

It’s picture time!

Here’s a pic of me the day we met Gracie. She didn’t come home for three more weeks. It felt like forever, because meeting her gave us both a bad case of puppy love!
